In July 2015, the first US Federal Aviation Administration-approved drone delivered 24 packages of medicine and medical supplies to a health fair in Appalachian coal country. This was the start of a new trend in healthcare that could expedite service and aid in minimizing human error. In the future, small indoor drones could deliver medicine to a patient's bedside, relieving nurses and pharmacists from the hassle of waiting for the cart. Drones also could be used to monitor a falls precaution or dementia patient, freeing up hospital resources for other tasks.

In the latest Healthcare Risk Management Update, Mike Midgley, RN, JD, MPH, CPHRM, FASHRM, discusses:

  • The possible uses, benefits, and liability exposure of drones in healthcare.
  • How to conduct an emerging technology risk assessment.
  • The importance and benefits of an ERM risk assessment, including protecting patients and staff from unexpected injury, shielding the organization from liability, and potential revenue-generating and cost saving effects.
