Application Engineer II (R Developer)

About the Role

As an Application Engineer II (R Developer), you'll be at the forefront of developing sophisticated analytical solutions that power Swiss Re's actuarial capabilities. You'll collaborate with experts across the organization while having the autonomy to implement creative technical solutions that make a real impact.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, build and deliver key capability within the Experience Studies engine, analyzing requirements from our Experience Studies Centre of Excellence who expect and welcome challenges to ensure a robust, performant, and complete solution

  • Support and empower our Experience Studies community in the effective use of our engine

  • Participate actively in agile activities to boost your and your peers' skills and quality of work

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure seamless integration of solutions

  • Optimize and maintain existing codebase for performance and reliability

We are looking for candidates who meet these requirements:

  • Advanced R programming skills with relevant experience over the last 12-24 months, especially with packages like tidyverse, dplyr, data.table, dtplyr, Rcpp, testthat, and shiny

  • Experience building production-grade applications (version controlled, with unit and functional tests, packaged format)

  • Strong data science and analytical skills with the ability to translate business requirements into technical solutions

  • Demonstrated desire to learn and improve continually

  • Experience using Posit commercial products: Posit Workbench, Posit Connect and Posit Package Manager

These are additional nice to haves:

  • Experience with performance optimization of R code (dtplyr, data.table, Rcpp, cpp11)

  • Background in deploying R solutions using CI/CD pipelines and cloud providers (e.g. Azure DevOps)

  • Ability to provide technical guidance, help & leadership to other R developers within the team

  • Familiarity with agile working methodologies

  • Actuarial knowledge or experience working with actuarial teams
