Senior Risk Engineer
Locations: Melbourne, VIC, AU | Teleworker, WA, AU | Brisbane, AU | Sydney, NSW, AU
Are you a seasoned civil engineer with a passion for risk, innovation, and making a real impact on some of the world's most ambitious infrastructure projects? Swiss Re Corporate Solutions is looking for a talented and driven Senior Risk Engineer to join our dynamic Australia and New Zealand (ANZ) market unit. This is your opportunity to bring your deep technical expertise to a truly global stage - where your insights shape underwriting decisions and help clients build a safer, more resilient world.
About the Role
As a Senior Risk Engineer in our Engineering & Construction (E&C) team, you will be a trusted technical advisor to our property underwriters, providing expert guidance on risk quality, loss estimates, and loss prevention strategies across our E&C book of business. You'll be at the intersection of engineering excellence and insurance innovation - reviewing complex submissions, conducting on-site inspections, and leveraging cutting-edge AI tools to deliver sharp, actionable insights.
This is a role with genuine global reach. You'll collaborate with underwriters and internal stakeholders across the world, contribute to best practice guidelines, and help shape the future of risk engineering in a fast-evolving industry.
Key Responsibilities
Provide expert technical advice to underwriters on risk quality, loss estimates, and loss prevention measures for the E&C book of business across the ANZ market
Review, interpret, and summarise complex submissions including third-party technical risk information, increasingly leveraging AI tools such as CoPilot and ChatGPT
Conduct on-site risk inspections and progress reviews to verify clients' risk mitigation approaches and provide tailored risk improvement recommendations
Engage directly with clients to deliver risk improvement suggestions and support their understanding of technical risk exposures
Collaborate closely with underwriters and other internal stakeholders to ensure technically sound and commercially relevant risk assessments
Contribute to global projects and publications covering best practices, guidelines, technology updates, and industry developments within the E&C and Renewables space
Lead and support internal improvement projects, driving efficiency and innovation within the Risk Engineering Services (RES) team
Stay current with international loss prevention and fire protection standards (e.g. NFPA or equivalent) and apply this knowledge to client engagement
About the Team
The team is a specialised and highly skilled group within Swiss Re's global Risk Engineering Services (RES) division. The team currently comprises nine engineers spread across the globe - with colleagues based in London, Amsterdam, Paris, Munich, Hong Kong, Chicago, Miami, and São Paulo - making this a truly international team with diverse perspectives and deep industry expertise.
About You
You are an experienced civil engineer who thrives in complex, fast-paced environments. You bring a rare combination of hands-on construction expertise and a sharp analytical mind, and you're equally comfortable on a project site as you are presenting to senior stakeholders. You're a natural collaborator - someone who values diverse perspectives, communicates with clarity and confidence, and approaches every challenge with curiosity and a service mindset. You're excited by the idea of applying your engineering knowledge in a new context, and you're eager to grow within a global organisation that values innovation and continuous improvement.
As the newest member based in Australia, you'll play a pivotal role in expanding our ANZ presence, bringing local market knowledge while benefiting from the collective intelligence of a world-class global network. The team is collaborative, intellectually curious, and committed to delivering excellence - and there's a strong culture of knowledge sharing, continuous learning, and mutual support. Whether you're working on a complex tunnel project in Asia or a wind farm assessment in the Pacific, you'll never be short of stimulating challenges or great colleagues to work alongside.
We are looking for candidates who meet these requirements:
Civil engineering background with a minimum of 10 years' experience in the construction industry, including roles such as design engineer, project lead, site manager, or commissioning engineer
Hands-on project experience on major infrastructure and industrial projects (e.g. tunnels, bridges, wind farms, power plants, or other heavy industries)
Strong knowledge of project control tools, including scheduling, cost management, and procurement processes, ideally supported by formal project management training
Good knowledge of the insurance E&C business, with the ability to interpret and assess technical risk information in an insurance context
Solid understanding of international loss prevention and fire protection standards (e.g. NFPA or equivalent)
These are additional nice to haves:
Previous experience as an insurance risk engineer at a broker or insurance company
Experience or strong interest in loss prevention topics, including fire protection, technical risk management, and loss analysis
Familiarity and hands-on experience with AI tools such as CoPilot, ChatGPT, or similar platforms
Strong communication, negotiation, and presentation skills, with the ability to convey complex technical information to diverse audiences
Demonstrated ability to lead internal improvement projects and drive positive change within a team environment
Regional language skills — any APAC language skills would be considered an advantage
A collaborative, team-player mindset with the ability to work effectively within a small, geographically dispersed global team
Willingness and flexibility to travel regionally (APAC) occasionally and internationally on a rare basis
