As we move towards the future, the demand for oleochemical is expected to increase. Products such as personal care, food & beverage and biodiesel utilize oleochemicals as its main ingredients. The global oleochemical market is projected to grow from USD35.43 billion in 2022 to USD54.43 billion by 2029. Oil and fats are important raw materials for the production of oleochemicals, including Free Fatty Acids (FFA), Methyl Esters, Fatty Alcohols and glycerol. The raw materials for oleochemical production come from vegetable oils such as soybean, palm oil, rapeseed and sunflower oils. Malaysia and Indonesia collectively make up more than 80 percent of global palm oil production. The production of oleochemicals can be very complex with various products from a few raw materials in an integrated plant. Production often involves high temperature, pressures and high amounts of flammable liquids and gases in the process stream which gives rise to many process and storage hazards. It is therefore important to understand what are the inherent hazards associated with specific processes and what are the possible protection that should be provided specifically for fire and explosion hazards.
