Balance sheet resilience: creating value beyond risk transfer
In today's business environment, volatility is no longer the exception, it is the baseline. Economic uncertainty, climate-driven losses and increasingly complex supply-chains are putting unprecedented pressure on corporate balance sheets.
When I recently prepared for a partner event, these themes came up in conversations with my Swiss Re Corporate Solutions colleagues. One message was clear: our clients are looking for more than traditional risk transfer. They want insights, clarity, and greater certainty in a world that is constantly changing.
Historically, Swiss Re, as a leading global reinsurer, has always provided superior risk modelling services and tools, such as risk data platforms and climate risk heat maps to insurance companies around the world. In the last few years, we have taken this expertise a step further. We have expanded our risk modelling capabilities directly to corporate clients through Risk Data Solutions (RDS), an innovative offering designed to strengthen balance sheet resilience.
Risk modelling services for corporates are a fast-growing, double-digit growth new business segment globally. The reason behind this is clear: Risk Managers and CFOs are looking for ways to deliver budget certainty, meet more demanding regulatory and stakeholder requests and provide clearer, data-driven insights into their risk exposure.
When it comes to climate risk, primary risks such as earthquakes are increasingly compounded by secondary perils such as windstorms, flood and hail damages, which are becoming more frequent and severe. At the same time, mapping risks the company's proprietary assets are exposed to is no longer sufficient as suppliers and clients also need to be assessed, given supply chain risks.
At Swiss Re Corporate Solutions, we have responded to this need by deploying and continuing investing in our RDS offering. This includes a powerful combination of our own proprietary climate risk database, which incorporates forward looking risk scenarios, with our clients' own information such as physical assets footprint, client and supplier locations, supply routes, among others, to create a digital twin of their operation, quantifying and simulating risk scenarios.
