Martin Bertogg is responsible for Swiss Re's Nat Cat research and model development globally. Current research hot spots revolve around climate change and urbanization impact on nat cat risk and open source nat cat modelling. He advises on Swiss Re's Group portfolio steering activities and capital allocation for the Nat Cat insurance and reinsurance.
Preceding this role, Martin was responsible for property treaty underwriting for international clients headquartered in Europe. In this function, he was responsible for the underwriting of mostly catastrophe and fire business. Up to 2010, he led the earthquake team, responsible for building Swiss Re's proprietary earthquake models, as well as Swiss Re's catastrophe modelling unit in Bangalore in India. Martin joined Swiss Re in 1999 as a researcher for catastrophe peril vulnerabilities and catastrophe modeller.
Prior to joining Swiss Re, Martin worked as a consulting engineer in risk assessment at Ernst Basler & Partner AG. Martin, a Swiss citizen, born in 1969, holds a degree in structural engineering from ETH Zurich as well as a Master of Science in Fire Protection Engineering, from WPI, Worcester, USA.
