Bushfires also known as wildfires create a significant threat to wildland urban interface areas around the globe. Bushfire preparedness should consider direct flame impingement as well as ember attack. Use this guide to help prepare for a bushfire event.
Plan components
- A dedicated response team with assigned tasks and authority levels
- Dedicated personnel to conduct pre-season preparation checks
- A list of equipment to be stored on-site for recovery efforts
- Local authority and utility contact information for reference when required
- Discuss and prepare with local emergency services and authority to understand evacuation timelines prior to bushfire event and
- use this information to inform and refine the site’s emergency response plan
- Relationships with vendors for back-up critical equipment, such as generators
- A post-event business continuity plan
- A formal training procedure, including a section to record practice runs
Plan components
Building inspection
- Check all gutters for debris and maintain as clear for duration of bushfire season
- Ensure roof edges, parapet caps etc. are tightly fitted with gaps no larger than 3 mm or 1/8 inch
- Ensure all vents and intakes are covered with mesh (no larger than 3 mm or 1/8 inch) to minimise risk of burning ember igniting/
- entering building via vents
- Replace wooden roof components with non-combustible components
- Consider enclosing open eaves or areas that create wind catchments (e.g., areas that accumulate leaves and debris)
